Winning betting strategy by James Callahan

Mention the words 'gambling system' and you're likely to get more than a few dubious stares but you can make a sizeable amount of money if you have a winning sports gambling system. They do exist! But before we reinvent the wheel, let's go over a few basics first. These are rules that everybody needs to abide by when placing bets on sports.

1. Do your homework.

This is crucial and kind of goes without saying but you'll be surprised at how many people bet thousands of dollars based primarily on their 'hunches'. While betting isn't an exact science, there's still no reason to be this brash about it. Watch lots of ESPN before the game, read sporting magazines, whatever. Listen to the experts if you're just starting out, evaluate what the different commentators say and critically assess WHY they're saying it, then you make your decision. Remember, they've been doing this a lot longer than you have, chances are they know more than you do as well. Even better than watching ESPN is buying a reputable betting book.

2. Never bet more than you can afford to lose.

This is definitely a big no-no. Pay your rent and buy your groceries before you bet, set a limit and stick with it NO MATTER WHAT! Chasing your losses is a surefire way to bankruptcy and that's not a fun place to be. Studies have shown that for some people, gambling works on the brain like cocaine; if you find yourself chasing your losses you might have a problem with addiction. Just don't do it, promise? Although chasing that big win is exhilarating, a good way to make a consistent profit is to spread your bets out most of the time (unless one game has a particularly favorable set of circumstances, then it's ok to the place a big bet).

3. Go for the underdog.

Betting is all about gaining the edge, tipping the odds in your favor. Since the odds for the underdog are always lower than for the favorite, the payoff if the underdog wins is that much higher. Therefore, under the right set of circumstances, the profits that you gain from betting on the underdog can be very high.

4. Stay on top of the info.

Catastrophes happen, so when disaster does strike, make sure you get out of the blast radius. Keep your bookie on speed dial if you have to. Or better yet, bet via an online sports-book so the whole process is automated and quick.

So there you have it, the tried and true method of betting: do your research, manage your money and tip the odds in your favor.
