Top female poker players by Sarah Maple

Why is the proportion of women playing in online poker tournaments higher than in real life tournaments? I hardly ever watch poker on TV so I don't know too much about who is who in the poker world but surely there are some good female role models out there. Poker after all is a glamorous game is it not? Look at James Bond in Casino Royale for example. You can hardly get more glamorous than that even though most of the women with their beautiful gowns and carefully coifed hair were reduced to mere arm candy in that famous scene. It is possible that there lays the problem, do women really prefer to be seen as glamorous distractions instead of serious threats to a man's game or is that how men would prefer them?

I see no reason why you can't be as equally glamorous and still play a good hand of poker. The stereotype that glamorous or good looking women are stupid is a joy to break as showing glamour and intelligence is a woman's finest hand.

Free online poker has given women the opportunity to practice without gamble and being generally the most sensible of the sexes they have taken this opportunity to practice without risk. These are the women who have raised their heads above the parapet to forge the way for women everywhere who love the game of poker.

Jennifer Harman Jen Harman is in everyone's top 5 lists of great female poker players. She is the only woman in the world to have won two bracelets in the open events and is one of the best players around today regardless of gender.

Kathy Liebert The woman who has made the most money out of poker with card winnings reported to total $4,140,832 over her years in the profession. Kathy started out in the poker world on the tables in the Colorado Rockies small bet tables. Since then she has come along way joining the few World Series bracelet winners on the journey. Barbera Enright After making her fortune on the live tables Barbera now prefers to play her poker online so that she can relax at home. Immortalised in the Poker Hall of Fame, she is now the editor-in-chief of Woman Poker Player magazine but will always be famous for being the first (and currently only) woman to reach the final table of the World Series of Poker, a pioneer all round she was also the first woman to win two and then three WSOP bracelets.

Vicky Coren The British one, she is the sister of journalist Giles Coren and has the most varied CV of the bunch, Coren can add directing a porn film, writing several books and presenting television and radio programmes to her bow. As yet she has never made it to a series grand final but this has not stopped her becoming one of the most admired women in Poker with winnings over $1,000,000 to date.
