NFL Betting Futures " Brady injury drops Patriots down Super Bowl odds pecking order by Bet Online

The New England Patriots were poised to capture the Super Bowl, coming off a near-undefeated season which ended in a huge upset at the hands of the New York Giants. The Patriots had great Super Bowl odds to begin the season, but the injury to reigning MVP Tom Brady opened the NFL futures category up.

The Patriots came out with Super Bowl odds of +350, tied with Dallas, but New England were the prohibitive favorites because they have been the NFL's best for the last decade. However, that all changed eight minutes into the first quarter of Week 1's 17-10 win over Kansas City, when Brady tore his ACL and MCL ligaments, which ruled him out for the season. The Patriots have dropped all the way to +1300 in 2008 Super Bowl odds, and their AFC championship odds are also rated at +775, behind San Diego, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. They were also favored to run away with the AFC East, but NFL division odds have the Patriots at +125, with Buffalo at +200, and the New York Jets at +215.

So, who is in the best position to take advantage of Brady's injury? Dallas is in the 2008 Super Bowl odds driver's seat at +295, but the largest effect will of course be felt in the AFC, where they have been leapfrogged by San Diego, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, all of whom face the Patriots this season. That the Patriots are no longer the dominant team in the AFC East may be the biggest surprise of all, as NFL betting lines for Week 2 had New England as 1.5-point underdogs on the road against the Jets. The Patriots have been favored in their last five trips to the "Big Apple", and have won seven in a row in New York overall, so the fact that they are underdogs to the Jets shows just how big of a deal Brady's injury really is for the Patriots.
